Why word counters matter

Why use a word counter?

Writers, marketers, and students rely on accurate counts every day. Stay within Twitter/X limits (280 characters), craft meta descriptions (155–160 characters), meet essay word minimums, or size blog posts for SEO. A live counter removes guesswork and saves editing time.

Who is this tool for?

Content writers, students, SEO professionals, social media managers, and developers who need quick text metrics without uploading documents to third-party servers.

How it works

All counting runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. Type or paste text and statistics update on every keystroke — private, fast, and free.

Reading vs. speaking time

Reading time uses ~225 words per minute (average adult silent reading). Speaking time uses ~130 words per minute (comfortable presentation pace). Both are estimates — adjust for your audience and content complexity.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

Words are sequences of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Punctuation attached to a word (e.g. "hello,") counts as part of that word.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

With spaces includes every character in your text, including spaces and line breaks. Without spaces removes all whitespace first, then counts remaining characters. Unicode symbols and emoji are counted correctly using code points.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. Processing happens locally in your browser. Your text never leaves your device unless you copy it elsewhere.

What is keyword density?

Density is the percentage of total words represented by a given term: (word count ÷ total words) × 100. Common English stopwords are excluded so you see meaningful terms for SEO and content review.

Can I use this for social media character limits?

Yes. Watch the Characters (with spaces) stat for platforms like X/Twitter (280), or Characters (no spaces) when a platform excludes spaces from the limit.
